Located in the Central Florida region, between the magic of
Orlando and the excitement of Daytona Beach, DeLand offers a
charming, picturesque downtown area. From its coffee shops to
its specialty boutiques, ethnic restaurants and local festivals,
historic DeLand offers a warm welcome. Speaking of warm —
the average temperatures in the winter are about 61 degrees
and the summer average is about 81 degrees!
Boating here offers more than 50 navigable miles of breathtaking
river and lakes with green banks framed by Spanish moss and
covered with Cypress trees. There are literally hundreds of
miles of shoreline with an abundance of wildlife — osprey,
deer, otter, turtles, alligators, blue heron, and many other
exotic birds. You can even see manatee at its winter home,
Blue Springs State Park, about 2 miles South of the club. Manatee
sea cows can be seen swimming upriver seeking warmer waters and are most commonly
sighted in February. The St. John's is navigable by vessels
with draft as deep as eight feet, from Sanford (just north of
Orlando) to Jacksonville. It offers some of the best boating
and fishing in North America.
In many areas you can wander up side channels and discover
fish camps and villages. Also known as the river of lakes, the
St. John's River widens into huge lakes that attract bass fishermen
from around the world. Other attractions include Hontoon Island
State Park, less than a mile from the yacht club and there are
places to dine and things to do all along the river!
